Lucy Jack

Lucy is 16 and is a student at Portsmouth College. She first tried sailing in 2005 and loved it but struggled to find any way to continue to learn because of her age and the expense involved. Then one of the skippers on the boat referred her to the Raymarine Lively Lady Project.

She said,
“I was really excited to discover there was a way I could carry on learning to sail but could also get so much more out of it. Through working with the project I’ve learned that I enjoy being relied on and look forward to the responsibilities that are given to me.

I also feel I have gained in confidence - I now find it much easier to speak to people I don’t know. After the first call I made about sponsorship, I started to feel more able to approach business people. I still find it difficult to talk in front of loads of people but I hope I’m getting better at this. I value having my opinions taken seriously and being treated as a young adult rather than a child.”

So far in her training, Lucy has experienced stormy weather, rough seas and sea-sickness but it’s not put her off. She’s looking forward to experiencing the very different cultures of Australia and Singapore and hopes to see a few dolphins en route!
