Kat is 17 and comes from the Buckland district of Portsmouth.
Since working with the project she's gained a really clear understanding of why it's so important to work as part of a team and to commit as a group to be able to make things happen. She said, "My confidence has grown so much already and the project has shown me how not to be afraid of mixing with new people and people I wouldn't normally speak to and not to be scared of volunteer myself for a challenge".
Kat has been involved with all of the group fundraising activities and also has a part-time job at Gunwharf Quays, where her new-found confidence really helps in dealing with the public.
She is currently studying for a BTEC national certificate in health and social care at South Downs College and is hoping to get really good grades so she can continue on to university to specialise in mental health nursing. She also hopes to do some voluntary work with underprivileged children in Africa. And, after all she's learnt so far about sailing, she really wants to carry on and get more involved with sailing.
"The project has changed my outlook on life by teaching me that anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it. It's made me choose that I want to continue on with my education at university as, if we can successfully take a boat around the world as a team, then I can do anything I set my mind to in life."
