Harrison (Harry) McCarthy
16 year old Harry is originally from Stamshaw but is now living in Weston Rhyn (Shropshire). He’s currently at college studying IT.
For Harry the project is a great chance to travel to places and experience cultures he would never normally get the opportunity to see. It’s also enabled him to meet new people and make many new friends. But most of all, it’s given him the chance to prove to himself that, when he really sets his mind on something, he can see it through to the end and make the most of the experience along the way.
In the process, he’s acquired a real sense of being part of a team during the fund-raising. But without a doubt, the high point in that was coming first in the Sponsored Swim and completing 148 lengths of the pool. He’s also been involved with all the bag packing and recycling and the Christmas Fair
So far, the best part of the training for Harry has been gaining his Competent Crew & RYA First Aid Certificates. In the process he learnt he was able to hold his own even as the youngest crew member on board with a group of adults doing their Day/Coastal Skipper training. Not bad for someone whose only previous experience on the water had been in his Stepfather’s power boat!
He’s really enjoyed his time with the project and feels it has given him far more confidence and belief in himself – something he plans to take with him in the future as he hopes to join the Royal Navy as an Aircraft Engineer. For now though he’s looking ahead to the short term and is really looking forward to experiencing the cultures of Singapore and Thailand and to taking his turn on board Lively Lady.
